Yes We Can!

It's an inspiring moment in world history. Less than 50 years since black people were not allowed to vote, in some American States, a black man has become President of the USA. But more than than, Barack Obama created a new coalition of people - including many who had never donated to political campaigns, or who had never thought that politics was about them - who led him to the White House on a tidal wave directed towards 'change'. Of course, he knows well that the hard work really begins now, and of course, many people are so used to being disappointed by their leaders that there is nearly always a hint of cynicism around; but surely we can see this moment for what it is: a profound reminder of the possibility of real change. It's not just about the individual, or the family, or even how America must now see itself differently, because its 'first family' represents the nation in a very different way; but is also about the possibility of change itself. So may we encourage each other to believe that real change is possible, and that it begins with us ...
